One of the most encouraging passages of scripture for me has been Hebrews 12. I, as a chosen child of God, receive special attention from God. Yes, different than some people would choose to believe, God does treat some people different than He treats others. Hebrews 12 tells us that God disciplines His own children so that they might become more like Christ. This is the process that God has ordained specifically for His children (Rom. 8:28, 29). God’s love is the driving force for His discipline.
The word in this passage translated discipline or chastening refers to more than just a discipline of correction. It carries with it the idea of someone training for an athletic event. It includes both correction and instruction. God arranges all the events of life to provide correction for when we sin, and give us instruction to grow.
When my life is characterized by trials and tests accompanied with the application of scripture by the Holy Spirit, I can rejoice because I can be assured that God is working His loving plan. There is a selective disciplining that is taking place in my life; I am being sovereignly loved.
I have experienced this glorious activity in my life this week. God has put me in a place where I feel extremely vulnerable. But, I cannot rest in my feelings. I must find hope in the unchangeable truth of God’s love. I am His workmanship created in Christ Jesus.
